How soon we forget. Our entire identity as IITians was based on our roll number, a UID that still carries over.

During the world war, captured soldiers were told to provide only their name, rank and serial number and divulge no other information

We have the driver's license number, social security number (or its national equivalents in other countries), the health card number and god know what else. When was the last time, your name alone was enough for your identification?

When you cross the border, what does the border security/immigration official check?
Your passport with a number associated with it.

One can go on.

Not that I am enamoured with all this. I think we are becoming more and more regimented, and stratified with respect to our identity.

There is probably hope, in the most unlikely place, technology. By the time, the government has completed the UID scheme, it may become obsoleted by another identification system.
